FOOT data taking @ GSI 2019 (April)

A preliminary set of measurements will be performed using the GSI beam in April 2019.

The campaign will take place in the period 4th-9th of April 2019.

Here useful information concerning the logistic and the preparation of the experiment are provided.

How to request a dosimeter at GSI

All the people who are planning to take part to the April data taking and who foresee entering the cave, need to officially ask for a GSI dosimeter.

Dosimeter request should be submitted not later than end of February 2019.

The request can be performed by filling the online form that you find at the following link:

https://www.gsi.de/en/work/organisation/staff_units/radiation_protection/online_requests/for_guests_application_for_an_official_personal_dosimeter_andor_barcode.htm

Hints and requested documents are summarized below:

  1. Ask for both a GSI dosimeter AND a QR code.
  2. You need to provide the following documents:
    • a Medical Certificate in English, not older than 12 months; the form is provided at the following link https://www.gsi.de/fileadmin/Sist/Formulare/Arzt_Bescheinigung.pdf
    • a Dose Report, where the current year and occupational life dose are summarized. You should request this report to the Qualified Expert at your home Institution.
  3. You need to attend the General Safety Instructions and succed at the final test in order to get a certificate (https://www.gsi.de/en/work/organisation/staff_units/radiation_protection/online_instructions.htm)
  4. you need to attend the Radiation Protection Instructions and succed at the final test in order to get a certificate (https://www.gsi.de/en/work/organisation/staff_units/radiation_protection/online_instructions.htm)
  5. Insert Ulrich Weber as GSI contact person, and "Biophysics Department" for the Dosimeter Box.
In order to get the safety instructions, those not having a GSI account should register at the following link: http://instruct-guest.gsi.de.

--> After submitting the request, please send a confirmation mail to Francesco Tommasino (francesco.tommasino@tifpa.infn.it) and to Ulrich Weber (u.weber@gsi.de).

Accomodation

GSI informed us that about 10 rooms (single rooms with private bathroom) are available at the GSI Guesthouse (inside the GSI campus) in the period end of March - beginning of April. The cost is 34 Euros/night.

The rooms can be reserved now by writing at guest-office@gsi.de, and eventually cancelled without penalties. When booking, you should indicate your affiliation to the FOOT experiment and your contact person at GSI (Ulrich Weber, Biophysics Department).

Other accommodations (hotels, b&b) are available in Arheilgen (10 min from GSI by car) and in Darmstadt city centre (30 min from GSI by car). Keep in mind that GSI is easily connected to Arheilgen and Darmstadt by public transport and by the GSI shuttle bus during the day until about 8 pm, but not during the night.

Possible accomodations in Arheilgen:

Accomodations in Darmstadt might be comfortable for those planning to rent a car.

How to reach

GSI can be reached from Frankfurt Airport/Darmstadt Train station by public transport, as described at the following link https://www.gsi.de/en/topmenu/anreise.htm

General information on Public Transport in the Darmstadt area can be found here: https://www.rmv.de/c/en/start/

A taxi car can be also booked in advance. In this case, you can contact the Secretary of the Biophysics Department (, mentioning your affiliation to the FOOT experiment.

--> Feel free to contact Francesco Tommasino (francesco.tommasino@tifpa.infn.it) in case of questions.

GSI Account

There is the possibility to ask for a GSI account. This gives access to the complete GSI network infrastructure. For this reason, the GSI IT Department would like not to provide a large number of accounts to non-GSI workers. Eduroam network is available at GSI for standard internet access.

The account should therefore be requested only by those involved in using the GSI cluster for data handling/storage.

The account can be requested by filling the form available at this link: https://www.hpc.gsi.de/accounts/index.php?0

When filling the request, you should refer to "Biophysics Department" and to Christoph Schuy (c.schuy@gsi.de) as contact person.

Plase, send a mail to Francesco Tommasino after requesting a GSI account.

Semi-cit: "Do not ask what FOOT can do for you, but rather what you can do for FOOT".
